Taskly allows you to pass card and bank debit fees on to your customers as a surcharge, which can help offset the cost of offering online payments. The following article outlines how to turn surcharging on or off, how the surcharge is calculated, and how it appears to customers and in your records.
You need a connected Stripe account to use this setting. Learn how to set up payments.
Turn Surcharging On or Off
Surcharging is off by default.
Go to Settings → Payment Settings
Under Online payments, turn Pass on card and bank debit fees on or off
Add or check your instructions under Offline Payments
Press Save Changes
Offline payment stays on while surcharging is on, so your customers always have a surcharge-free way to pay. Make sure your offline payment instructions are up to date.
How the Surcharge Is Calculated
Taskly sets the surcharge rates, and the same rates apply to every business. You choose only whether to charge them. The surcharge applies to customers who pay online by card or bank debit, including Afterpay and Klarna, which use the card rate. Offline payments have no surcharge.
The surcharge is made up of a percentage of the amount being paid, plus a fixed fee. Bank debit surcharges have a maximum amount. The percentage is worked out on the amount before the surcharge, so your customer can check it against the price they see.
The surcharge can be slightly less than the fee Stripe charges. This is because Stripe also takes its percentage of the surcharge itself, and Taskly doesn't add this to what your customer pays.
What Your Customers See
Before paying an invoice or quote, your customer sees the following for each online payment option:
The surcharge amount in dollars
How the surcharge is made up
When they select a payment option, they also see the amount being paid, the surcharge, and the total they will be charged. The offline option shows that no surcharge applies. At Stripe checkout, the surcharge appears as a separate Payment surcharge line.
How Surcharges Appear in Your Records
The surcharge doesn't change your invoice total. It's recorded on the payment instead, which shows the Payment applied, the Payment surcharge and the Total charged.
If you're GST registered, the surcharge includes GST at your business rate. If you aren't, no GST is applied to it.
Each payment keeps its original surcharge, so a later rate change doesn't affect past payments. Invoice exports contain your service charges and leave out surcharges.
If you use Xero, surcharges sync separately from your invoices. Learn how surcharges sync to Xero.
